Prime Small Screen Selections: 7 Essential Motion Pictures This Week

Top Selection

The Substance

Director Coralie Fargeat's unflinching satire addresses the tyranny of women's appearance as well as the perceived horrors of growing older. Demi Moore presents an inspired portrayal in the role of Elisabeth, a mature actress forced into hosting a fitness program on the small screen. Pushed out thanks to her unscrupulous employer Harvey, she seeks out a mysterious and gruesome treatment called "The Substance". This produces a youthful duplicate portrayed by Margaret Qualley, culminating in a steadily more parasitic dynamic between them. This Friday, Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10

This suspenseful story stars Knightley as Laura, an ace reporter who opts for some time off from writing about global conflict to board an opulent ship alongside an ailing Norwegian shipping heiress and philanthropist, her husband, as well as other extremely wealthy passengers. However when an unknown lady disappears from the ship during the evening and the entire crew insists she wasn't real, Laura's investigative instincts awaken. Out now, on Netflix

Presence

Soderbergh pushes his film-making abilities through this clever ghostly tale filmed completely through the eyes of a ghost. After a clan featuring mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe moves into their new suburban house, the camera – AKA the Presence – follows them around. Chloe seems conscious of the supernatural presence, and the entity appears guarding her. But why? The premise is enjoyable that remains concise, with a twist you might not see coming. Saturday 11 October, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema Premiere

Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy

The iconic actor embraces his eccentric image in this self-referential adventure. He acts as a narcissistic film star called Nicolas Cage who takes on a $1m payday to attend a birthday party at a Mediterranean location for the rich superfan Javi. Recruited by government spies to investigate the potential kingpin, Cage's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” comes in handy. This Saturday, evening, the Channel 4 network

The Black Phone

The director's claustrophobic thriller holds up well despite the lack of a sequel. Set in 1970s Colorado, a series of kidnappings has made the youth on edge. Once Finney gets captured by the villain and held captive in a cellar, he anticipates a terrible outcome. But the non-functional line mounted nearby repeatedly calls, with spooky callers providing assistance, as the prescient dreams from his sibling Gwen could save him. A genuinely scary movie. Saturday 11 October, 10.50pm, on Film4

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the conflict between faith and wealth, the victory is clear for materialism in this director's delightfully tacky true story regarding the shamed televangelist and her criminal husband. Garfield plays the corrupt Bakker, who states initially, “God does not want us to be poor,”. He and Tammy Faye begin monetising the people's Christian beliefs. It's an extravaganza of bad interior design, bad makeup and hypocrisy, yet the lead actress manages to show the real-life figure as a sympathetic figure. Next Tuesday, late night, the Film4 channel

The Spy Mystery

This period's another release from Steven Soderbergh presents a spy mystery as precise like the turtlenecks sported by Fassbender's UK spy. His assignment is to discover a traitor within their ranks from five suspects – including is his own wife. Each performer excel of understated style, so a delicious mind game of truth or lie takes place. The supporting cast take part the clever spy entertainment. This Friday, various showings, Sky Cinema Premiere
